CIRCLE IX · JUDECCA · CANTO XXXIV
Satan’s frozen prison
The very center of Hell. The furthest point from love.
In Judecca, the deepest region of the ninth circle, Satan is imprisoned chest-high in the frozen lake of Cocytus. His six wings beat endlessly, producing the winds that keep his own prison frozen.
His three faces chew Judas Iscariot, Brutus, and Cassius—Dante’s examples of betrayal against divine and earthly benefactors. Here, evil is powerless isolation rather than triumphant rule.
BEYOND THE INFERNO
And so we came forth
to see again the stars.
You have traveled through all nine circles. Dante’s journey continues
through Purgatory and, finally, into Paradise.
